Hurd Estate
Chief among properties now used as private residences is the Hurd Estate, featuring a large Tudor home on the north face of the 570 foot/175m Camel’s Hump on Santee Mill Road near Altonah Road. In addition to the main house, there are two other residences and several outbuildings, including a large barn. The Tudor home was built for Archibald’s daughter, Elizabeth Margaret, and her husband George Kingsley and was sold to George Hurd in the 1980s.
Housenick Residence
The private residence at the end of the drive leading to Housenick Park is situated near the home of Janet Johnston Housenick and William D. Housenick. Mrs. Housenick’s generosity has ensured the preservation of the 55-acre Housenick Park and the adjoining Archibald Johnston Conservation Area along the Monocacy Creek in perpetuity.
