Spring and Pump House

The Johnston family’s principal source of water

MAP 13

Residents of Camel’s Hump Farms enjoyed superb drinking water from the spring pictured above. Water at a temperature of 54 to 57 degrees Fahrenheit bubbled up from limestone below into the pool behind the split-rail fence, and was drawn up to a storage cistern located under the “Big House” atop the bluff for gravity redistribution to many locations around the property.

The pump house (not shown, about 50 yards uphill from the spring) drew the water from the spring, sending it up to the cistern about a quarter-mile away.

The spring was covered with a platform during the years before World War II and the area was used for parties with live musical entertainment.

For health and safety reasons, do not go beyond the fence or drink the water from the spring.
