Stone Steps

A Housenick Park signature feature

MAP 3

The upper entrance to the stairs is adjacent to the sun porch of the mansion. Weathering and time have caused structural damage, making them unsafe. The township erected a split-rail fence in 2014 to prevent their use pending funds for general park repair and improvement.

From behind the split-rail fence, observe the bent steel flagpole at the center of the landing below. The flagpole was bent in half by a mature tree blown over in a storm several years ago. At the landing, the steps branch, turning to the west toward the tennis courts and lime kilns and to the east toward the road to the spring and pump house.

At the top of the steps are two beech trees, one American and one English. The trees were selected by Johnston and his grounds planners in the 1920s, and their maturity and grandeur match the intent of the landscape architect who designed the steps.
